House of Cards

Radiohead have taken a different approach to their new video “House of Cards”. Unlike more traditional music videos they decided to use technology to produce the video. So instead of cameras and lighting, two different types of technology were used to capture the whole video.

Geometric informatics scanning systems produce structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity,  basically is a scanner that records points of data at 180º. Velodyne Lidar is a system that uses 64 lasers that revolve recording 90º slices, this is used to capture things on the bigger scale, such as landscapes.

The video was directed by James Frost of Zoo Films and technical director Aaron Koblin.

It’s a unique approach to the common ‘music video’, which usually involves someone singing to camera, driving a flash car around, or sat on some scaffolding playing a guitar (like you do). A strong combination of cutting-edge technology married with an edgy visual aesthetic — bang on brand for Radiohead.
